--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A human waste spill - 500 feet long and 18 inches thick - was discovered
Friday on Interstate 10 near Hayfield Road by the California Highway Patrol,
dispatchers said.
The spill, spotted at 10:20 a.m. on the shoulder, looked like fertilizer,
dispatchers said, but it turned out to be "treated" human waste.

It was not hazardous, dispatchers said. It is unknown how the waste
materialized.

The mess was cleaned up by the California Department of Transportation about
1:30 p.m. The agency could not be reached for comment.

No further information was available.

Hayfield Road is located between the towns of Chiriaco Summit and Desert
Center.
