At least the flies will be happy

Liberty Energy of Bakersfield would like to construct a sludge plant in Imperial County. Sounds like a stinky idea to me. If approved, the proposed sludge plant is to begin converting human waste into energy for Los Angeles by late 2008. The fecal matter is going to arrive by the truckload, so graciously donated by all 9.9 million-plus residents of Los Angeles County.

Does this sound like a good idea? I know the flies are jumping for joy. The company says there is no concern for leakage onto the land. Well, I guess it’s leak proof and the odor is supposed to be exhausted by fans (ah ha, they admit there is a smell). No long-term impacts? Where’s their crystal ball? As for the political aspect of this, you can speak with the special interests, whose pockets will get fatter by the minute. On a positive note, this $91 million project is going to create a whopping 20 permanent jobs. For whom, you ask? Well, for our friends from across the border, of course.
